Of course I did not go fishing….I went to Spain! While I saw many magnificent paintings, I cannot say the same thing for the objects but I also had limited time and was in search of every Goya and Velasquez that I could lay my eyes on. However, I did travel to Bilbao to see a marvel of twentieth-century architecture…the Guggenheim Bilbao. It was love at first sight for me. Frank Gehry’s building is a masterpiece and I would like to share with you my photos. I am also including some photographs of the Guggenheim here in New York, in case anyone has forgotten what it looks like. Completed by master architects, both buildings are mesmerizing. In fact, before leaving for Spain I visited the museum to see the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibition and to take a mental picture of the building with me on my trip to Spain. The Wright exhibition left the same impression on me as the Gehry exhibition, also held at the Guggenheim, in 2001: I was overwhelmed. And while I enjoyed looked at the sketches of their works, nothing can compare to the real thing. Take a look for yourself.
Ps. I am also including a snapshot of the Santiago Calatrava designed bridge that is located within walking distance of the museum. Calatrava is another great architect whose work I cannot get enough of. I am, like other New Yorkers, looking forward to see his completed project for the PATH Station at Ground Zero.
